The DLA Annual Conference will be held on Friday, May 19, 2006 at the Dover Sheraton Hotel. This year the conference will include a dinner and an evening event. The goal is to have at least two keynote speakers, one at lunch and another at the dinner. The Planning Committee is considering, as an alternative to an awards breakfast, the presentation of awards at more than one program during the day. Some awards would be presented first thing in the morning at an awards program to make it convenient for school and government officials to be present when their colleagues are receiving awards. Other awards would be presented at lunch or during the division business meetings. A continental breakfast associated with registration will be offered to all conference attendees. There is interest in offering programming on the issue of the health care divide possibly tied to a theme of accessibility to information. Lt. Governor Carney has been invited to speak on the health care divide. While he cannot commit to the date this far in advance of the conference, he has tentatively accepted. One suggestion for the evening event is an author signing. The author or authors would be the keynote speaker(s) at dinner. Other ideas for programming include asking an ALA officer to speak and providing an update on ALA Council featuring present and past Delaware councilors. Again this year, the divisions will each be developing two programs and contributing ideas for the conference theme and keynote speakers. If you have programming ideas or suggestions for speakers, please contact a member of the Conference Planning Committee: Julie Brewer, University of Delaware Library, jbrewer@udel.edu Kathy Graybeal, Delaware Division of Libraries, kathy.graybeals@state.de.us Kevin Swed, Delaware City Public Library, kswed@co.new-castle.de.us Lisa Olson, Delaware Division of Libraries, lisa.olson@state.de.us Michael Gutiérrez, University of Delaware Library mgutierr@udel.edu Paul Anderson, UD Library, pa@udel.edu Terri Jones, New Castle Public Library, tjones@co.new-castle.de.us Please let us know what information you want your association to provide at the annual conference. -submitted by Paul Anderson DLA Bulletin Sept./Oct. Page 2 School Librarian Shows Class, “Why Go Buy the Book When You Can Go By the Library?” Continued above Building on State Treasurer Jack Markell's program: "Read! Using your Library is an Investment in your Future," school librarian Kelly De Leon , s c h o o l librarian for North G e o r g e t o w n Elementary in the I n d i a n River School District, created an exercise for her classes that took Mr. Markell’s example to a higher level. “My students' task was to find an estimated value of our school's library by creating a shelf list, then searching the titles on the internet, finding a library binding price if possible. We then took a class average for both fiction and non-fiction shelves, multiplied by the number of titles in the library, then found an estimated value of our library.” Taking it even further Kelly had her fourth and fifth graders estimate the amount of money they saved every school year by checking out books from their library verses buying books from a bookstore. After creating the estimate with over 35 classes, the value ranged from about $110,000 to $150,000. The students also concluded that the non-fiction section of the library was more costly to replace. Working with State Treasurer Jack Markell, librarians across Delaware are distributing books, bookmarks, reading logs, recommended reading lists and other materials to Delaware’s schoolchildren. The theme of this new campaign is “Read! Using Your Library is an Investment in Your Future!” Through the program, children further their appreciation of libraries as places to build their knowledge. They also understand that by reading more, they learn more. And by learning more, they earn more. The students are Delaware School Library Media Association Offers Mini-Grant School librarians today do an amazing job of connecting students and reading. With limited budgets, dated materials and growing enrollments, the librarians are finding many ways to create fun and exciting programs for their students. The Delaware School Library Media Association is offering the opportunity for one of its members to receive a $250 mini-grant. The purpose of this mini-grant is to provide funds for innovative programs that focus on reading for fun. Completed applications must be received by the DSLMA Executive Board by December 15, 2005. Depending on the amount of funding requested by applicants, the Board may award up to a total of $250. This amount may be given to one applicant in full or divided up among applicants according to project needs. Recipients will be notified and funding will be presented by February 1, 2006. Recipients must agree to share their projects in a session at the spring Delaware Library Association Conference. To request an application please contact: Christine Payne Olive B. I am also going to be on vacation from October 4-11th. Lunch will be at Applebee's on your own. Applebee's is located across the highway from DSU. CRLD will be treating our two speakers to lunch only. Let me know if you are interested in joining us. I will need to reserve a table. If we have enough requests we may schedule another week for another class about blogging. That will be determined by Stephen and Jane and the cost of gas. Stephen and Jane are also presenting at the Virtual Library conference in San Francisco in November. Subject: Trick or Treats of Blogging This session is intended to first discuss the latest phenomenon of blogs. Librarians are the type of people who like to look under the hood and kick the tires of new information services before they jump onto fads. Discussion will be on blog technology as well as avenues for practice. Following this session, you will have direct hands on experience in creating and managing a blog. You will learn how to not only do but undo actions. Please come prepared by registering first with www.bloglines.com.!! Page 6 Okay so now I have mapped all the data for the Kent, Sussex and Delaware Tech databases, do you know what I’m going to do now? Hope I don’t have to do that ever again any time soon. As you can tell, we have passed another major milestone for the Delaware Library Catalog. The first data extractions took place last month and using that data I matched up all of the Dynix/Horizon codes, items and patrons to their new fields in SirsiDynix Unicorn. Now it is all in the hands of our data loader at SirsiDynix. She will apply the map to the data she has and Presto! we have a system. Actually that is not quite right. We then have to test the integrity of the data by checking records in the old system and see how they look in the new. We will be doing that after the Implementation Team training in the first week of November. Completing this part of the project along with the policies I finished last month brings more and more of the ILS into focus. We can see how our decisions have a ripple effect across the system. Fortunately the involved libraries have all been really good about coming together as a group and the team has been quick to recognize potential trouble spots and arrive at solutions for them. With this part of the project complete, I can turn my attention now to training, my own and the staff members of the libraries using the system. More on that in the next bulletin. -submitted by Vinny Alascia In the System A Whole New Mind: Moving from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age by Daniel H. The guide presents selected print and electronic resources relating to the Constitution and to Delaware's role in its ratification. Delaware was the first of the 13 colonies to ratify the Constitution, making it "the First State." Additionally, the page links to other resource pages, such as National Archives, the Library of Congress, and the U.S. Department of Education. Some of these resource pages include resources especially designed for teachers. The page was created by Rebecca Knight, reference librarian and government documents subject specialist. Drawing on research from around the world Dan Pink has included in the book exercises, tools and tips to help you hone your mental abilities. “If all the Delaware Library Community Read the Same Book…,” features work of relevance and interest to the entire library community.
