The American Library Association (ALA) Public
Programs Office (PPO), in collaboration with the
National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH),
is pleased to announce “Picturing America,” a
new grant opportunity for schools and school
libraries. Applications are now available at http://
publicprograms.ala.org/picturingamerica.
A pilot project of NEH's We the People program,
“Picturing America” has been created to promote
the teaching, study and understanding of
American history and culture in K-12 schools
through examples of the nation’s most significant
works of art and architecture and to facilitate
interdisciplinary partnerships between school
library media specialists, art teachers, classroom
instructors and other educators.
“Picturing America” will provide 500 public and
private schools with:
- A collection of 20 double-sided, laminated
posters depicting works of American art.
- A 100-page resource booklet with information
about the paintings, sculpture, architecture, and
crafts reproduced. The booklet contains essays
for each poster, teaching suggestions, and quick
introductory exercises geared to different grade
levels.
- The Picturing America Web site, which will
contain links to extensive lesson plans and other
educational resources organized by poster,

Please allow us to introduce ourselves: We are
the Middle Atlantic Region of the National
Network of Libraries of Medicine! (They used to
be called RMLs or Regional Medical Libraries.)
We help connect the National Library of
Medicine, and its products and services, with
libraries and with health professionals, members
of the public, and organizations that need access
to health information. Our territory covers
Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and
Pennsylvania.
What we do:
• Provide free training in-person and over the
web; right now we have over 25 classes available:
http://nnlm.gov/training/classes.html
• Assist our member libraries in using
DOCLINE, the interlibrary loan system for health
sciences libraries, that processes over 2 million
interlibrary loans nationwide per year
• Give awards so that libraries can lend and
receive materials more easily; provide training to
underserved groups; and ensure that consumers
are aware of the high quality health information
available to them from the National Library of
Medicine
We do all this on a contract from the National
Library of Medicine; it’s 5 years and was
awarded to New York University for 2006-2011.
How to contact us:
• Our website that tells you more about our
programs and services: http://nnlm.gov/mar
• Our e-mail discussion list that will keep you
informed about training, changes to DOCLINE,
and our awards: marl@lists.med.nyu.edu
• Our toll-free telephone number to speak to
one of our staff: 800-338-7657
We will also exhibit at the 2007 Delaware
Library Association Conference on May 8. Stop

Lee Meinersmann, born Rosali V. Bronenkant,
88, passed unexpectedly and peacefully on
December 25 while celebrating Christmas with
her family. Lee was an accomplished, self-made
woman and independent thinker born in a Polish
immigrant neighborhood in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin. Discovering a love of reading at an
early age, she became the first member of her
family to graduate from college, Milwaukee
Downer. While studying for a librarian degree in
Seattle, Washington, Lee met Herman (Hank)
Theodore Meinersmann who became her
husband.
The two began an adventurous life of frequent
moves after her husband became an Air Force
officer, and Lee worked in various libraries,
founding three libraries: one public, one school,
and one medical. In Delaware she was a school
Librarian in the Caesar Rodney district, the
Director of the Laurel Public Library, Head
Librarian for the Delaware Technical &
Community College, and the Director of the
Maryland Library Material Center in Salisbury,
MD. She held volunteer leadership positions in
multiple organizations, including: Girl Scouts of
America; National Mental Health Association;
League of Women Voters; Audubon Society;
Sussex Arts Council; American Field Service;
and, AAUW. Master gardener, bird-watcher,
potter, and arts collector, Lee was always an
active participant in life. During her recent years
in Georgia, she taught AARP Drivers Education,
volunteered at the Georgia Botanical Gardens and
the Sandy Creek Nature Center in Athens, and
interviewed WWII veterans for the Veterans
History Project.
Her survivors include her older brother George
Bronenkant; her five children: Jonna Detweiler,
Karen Falk, Tedd, Richard, and Mark; her eight
grandchildren; and her three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at Central
Presbyterian Church, Athens GA, January 27th at
11:00 AM prior to her burial at Arlington
National Cemetery. To honor her memory,
donations can be made in her memory to the
American Heart Association, the Sandy Creek
Nature Center (Athens, GA), or the Audubon
Society.
