Minner said. “I commend and congratulate each of the winners for their dedication and commitment to excellence in their organizations.” The Delaware Division of Revenue received the Gore Award for Performance Excellence, which recognizes Delaware organizations with the highest levels of performance and which are role models in all seven criteria categories—leadership, strategic planning, customer focus, measurement and analysis, human resources focus, process management and results. As we all knuckle down to our mounting piles of paperwork and electronic loads let us take a moment to pause and reflect on our own good fortune to live in America and work in a society that embraces our freedoms and our ALA Bill of Rights. Also, let us try to do all we can to support and further the world efforts to assist those impacted by the unbelievable tragedies that occurred over the holidays. For our spring bulletin, I did want to take this opportunity to share some insight from a personal perspective on the Integrated Library System. This project, managed under the direction of our State Librarian, Annie Norman and her team at the Delaware Division of Libraries, will provide a single catalog interface for the Kent and Sussex Public Libraries. The system chosen is Sirsi and the finalized contracts are under review. The integrated library system will open a brand new vista for Delaware Libraries and affect each one of us. Not only will the patrons of Kent and Sussex County enjoy a single searching interface for their public library resources but they will become better acquainted with the library services and programming from all our libraries. As patrons of the entire system, they will feel ownership and identify with the need to support the efforts to provide resources for every area of our state. Keep an eye out on the DLA list for updates on the implementation of the system and please join me in applauding all the hard work done by the staff at the Delaware Division of Libraries. They coordinated and provided collaborative opportunities for the stakeholders involved to address the multiple issues identified as crucial hurdles for a project of this type. -submitted by Margaret Prouse DLA President DLA President’s Message Children’s & Young Adult Book Talks For those interested in new children’s books and young adult books, the following programs may interest you. “Ethnicities Abound” FEBRUARY 2 – Newark, ERC FEBRUARY 3 – Dover, Kent Co. Friday the 13th, May 2005 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the much-anticipated sixth title of the popular series about the British boy who discovers he is a talented wizard, hits American bookstores July 16. Readers young and old have fallen under the spell of the Harry Potter books, by author J.K. Rowling. In the United States, there are over 80 million Harry Potter books in print, and each title has been on the New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists. The fifth title, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, set records with its first print run of 6.8 million copies and a second print run of an additional 1.7 million copies, a figure unprecedented for any book. Arthur Levine read J.K. Rowling’s book on a flight from New York to the Bologna Book Fair in Italy. He bid for the publication rights, eventually paying $100,000. It was possibly Scholastic’s payment of this enormous figure which led to instant media attention, thereby putting Rowling’s work in the spotlight more than the already-favorable reviews might have done (J.K. Rowling: A Biography, Sean Smith, Michael O’Mara Books Limited, 2001). Arthur Levine is a vice-president of Scholastic Inc. and editorial director of Arthur A. Levine Books. Prior to establishing his imprint at Scholastic, Levine held the position of editor-in-chief of Books for Young Readers at Alfred A. Knopf and at G.P. Putnam's Sons. Among the wide range of books he has edited are Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass, Rafe Martin and David You are invited to the Delaware Library Association Annual Conference: Great Libraries -- It Takes More Than Luck!
